My pleasure writing this one, guys. I keep feeling like I'm writing "d'uh" articles, but as long as they foster questions, comments and links to those before me who had the idea first (as well as agreement from intelligent fellows like yourselves), I'm happy.

Thanks for commenting. <3

Here's some neat stuff, including a link that comes right straight back here.

http://psychedelictreehouse.com/networking-contents.php

People have become incredibly tight about linking in the last few years. Remember a few years ago when almost every site had a huge brick wall of microbanners? You rarely see that any more.

Google wants to see linking patterns that are like what what people traditionally did. Six, 12, maybe twenty trades, some non-reciprocated linking and regular linking in blogs and the like.

A lot of people are blogging nonsense about SEO right now, because they're not listening to Google's "natural linking" philosophy.

PsychedelicTreehouse.com has 3000 outbound links, including whole pages of nothing but links, and about 50 incoming links. By blog wisdom, it should be a link farm with a PR 0. But it has steady traffic with almost no advertising, user participation, a reasonable Page Rank (3 or 4 last time I looked, I forget) and the steady stream of quality content negates the link farm risk, according to experts I've talked to.

I have limited links on my comics right now because of an unusual circumstance, now passed, but I hope people will join me in linking again. One idea: link to what you're reading now, or have enjoyed recently, and change the links as time passes. Avoid getting that constipated look in the link rolls of many famous comics, all linked to each other, not even considering what a link might do for an upcoming title of merit.

Thanks again, KEZ!

Good article with some very good points! Almost every comic I read now came as the result of the recommendation from a webcomic creator I was already reading. That's one of the most powerful tools I think we have. It is sharing our already limited audience, to be true, but this'll grow. Otter, over at a Girl and her Fed, pointed out that the economy's crummy so people need a free/cheap source of entertainment. Webcomics fit that bill nicely, if we capitalize on it.

My guess is FreakAngels doesn't have a banner because Ellis doesn't think like a webcomic writer. Then again, given the fame factor, he likely doesn't need to.
