Not Alone World Info

The World of Tsa-Ru'c: "Seven Moons."

GEOGRAPHY:

Not Alone Arc I at first takes place in the land of Kephyr, a rocky, mossy land cut off from the rest of the world by violent oceans. In a world with 7 moons, the oceans most everywhere are violent, fast and stormy, and this isolation has led to lack of contact between any lands where the ocean must be crossed.

Later in Arc I, when Relan managed to cross the ocean with the help of the West Wind (page 10), she arrives in Keyen Lands, called by humans as the Unclaimed Territories. These lands are cold, covered in forests and mountainous. Humans leave the Keyen alone out of fear of being eaten, for the most part, though that is mostly a myth.

An unfinished, roll-over map of Tsa-Ru'c can be found here, if you're interested in the geography.

KEYEN

There are 12 Keyen Clans, all distinctly different from the rest in body type, size, temperment and horn design. So far in Not Alone, there have been glimpses of 5 of the 12:

Keeshin:

Kruush:

Oa:

Rree:

Xor:

Despite what the people of Kephyr think of Keyen, most are neither vicious nor mere "beasts." People who know the Keyen called them the Great or Ancient Keyen--not only for their large size (Clan Kruush are the size of small ponys!), but because of how they carry themselves. Keyen are highly intelligent, and are born able to understand not only their native tongue, but also human languages, even if they cannot speak it. They honor a pact made countless generations ago, though they tell no human what the pact is. The few Keyen that leave the Unclaimed Territories almost never return there, because they are either killed in ignorance, or found what they were looking for.

SHAN

Technically called a "Shan Pairing," there are 2 members in each Shan: The "Key'Shan" is the Keyen half, and the "Na'Shan" is the human half. Shan are born not knowing what they are, but one day, they begin to hear or see or smell things not there. These senses are somehow sent to one by the other, subsconciously and uncontrollably. Able to sense each other's locations, even half a world away, they have a choice: ignore the pull of the other half, or go in search of the other half.

Those who ignore the pull of Shan for long enough find that it fades, or even stops completely, if the other dies.

Those who try to find the other half of Shan face danger and a world often hostile to what they are.

Those who become Shan never regret it.
